YOUR PEOPLE. YOUR PURPOSE. YOUR NEXT STEP.
WordPress.com: what it does, who it suits and where to start.
A hosted home for a website you want to keep publishing.
What it does—and where it fits.
WordPress.com is a hosted website and publishing service. You create pages and posts while the hosting service provides the underlying platform. The open-source WordPress software available through WordPress.org is a related but different route: it can be installed with another host, with different responsibilities and costs.
Is it a useful fit for you?
Businesses that expect to update pages, publish articles and grow a content library. A single simple landing page may need less software. A complex store needs a separate check of commerce features, integrations and ongoing operating work.
A customer-first example
A local consultant builds a clear services page, a page explaining who they help, and a small collection of answers to the questions prospects ask before booking. Each article links naturally to a relevant service rather than filling the site with unrelated search terms.
The story and the people behind it.
WordPress.com launched in 2005. It is owned and operated by Automattic Inc., the privately held company founded by Matt Mullenweg. Automattic’s current company information lists Mullenweg as founder and CEO. This does not mean Automattic owns every WordPress website or the entire open-source ecosystem.
Costs worth understanding before you start.
Check hosting renewal price, domain renewal, storage, plugin access, theme costs, commerce requirements and support. Match features to your actual project before choosing a billing term. A free starting plan and a business-ready setup can have different limitations.
Prices, included features, availability and leadership can change. Use the provider’s current plan and terms pages as the purchase reference. DigiSites does not sell or administer this third-party service for you.
How to get started.
- Write down your customer, your main offer and the action the site should make easy.
- Visit WordPress.com and compare plans against that brief. Check renewal and cancellation conditions before paying.
- Create your account, choose an initial site address and pick a simple theme. Keep control of the account and domain.
- Build your core pages, then add only the functions your customer journey requires. Test them on a phone and with a keyboard.
- Connect your domain when the site is ready. Review backups, updates, privacy settings and the process for keeping information current.
One detail that can save a wrong turn.
A WordPress.com account does not automatically make a DigiSites HTML download editable as a WordPress theme. Choose either a WordPress build or a compatible static-hosting workflow; conversion between them is a separate project.
Take the next step when it makes sense.
